- Written by Administrator
If you get the error message MTU Failed on the Xbox 360 Xbox Live test or Xbox Live Failed (NXE) when trying to connect to Xbox Live this can be caused for different reasons depending on your setup.
Was it working ok before?
Before going ahead and making any changes, was Xbox live working before? And all of a sudden you are getting an MTU or Xbox Live failure? If so its probably just a temporary problem.
You can quite often get an MTU failure if the Xbox live service is down, or there is some disruption in the path between your Xbox and the live service (i.e. a problem with your ISP). So if this message has just appeared and it was working fine earlier. Sit it out and wait.
However, if this is a new setup and you've never been able to connect. Read on.

MTU Failed/Xbox Live Failed
- If you are connecting your Xbox 360 direct to your PC for its Internet Connection and using a Personal Firewall ensure the ports on this page are configured to be set to pass through your firewall.
- If you are connecting your Xbox 360 to a router ensure its firewall ensure the ports on this page are configured to be set to pass through its firewall.
- If you are experiencing problems with the MTU test on the Xbox 360, you will need to change your router or PC (if you are using ICS) to conform to the Xbox live standards.
- On a router you will need to browse to the configuration screen and change the setting to a maximum of 1492 or if you are using AOL try 1450, 1400 or 1365 (the lowest possible setting for Xbox Live is 1364). Save the settings and reboot the router and try again.
- Basically you need to keep lowering the setting until you get one that works for you. If you are using ICS you will need a program called DrTCP to change your settings, google for it and change your internet connections MTU and reboot your PC.
- With some routers you can set-up Access Control (The BT HomeHub for example) so that certain devices are only allowed to connect to the Internet at certain times of day, ensure this has not been configured for your Xbox during the time you want to play on Xbox Live otherwise you will see an MTU failure.

- And see this FAQ for info on Tweaking and finding the best MTU value for your setup, or this one and this to find your optimum MTU value
- DrTCP does not work on Vista, please see this page for tips on tweaking your MTU using Vista.

Belkin Wireless N Router?
It has been known for some models of Belkin N routers to complain about MTU issues ( e.g. N+ F5D8635-4 ) to resolve this problem try using a static ip address for the Xbox and assign that ip address to the DMZ of the router, save and restart the router and try again. Follow these instructions for Belkin N routers and also see this post on our forum for more details
