How to configure a Dlink router to use PPPoE

( 0 Votes )
Some Internet Service Providers supplied modems are not just modems they are actually routers and if you choose to connect your own router to them you can end up with a "double NAT" situation and your Xbox NAT ends up strict. To resolve this problem most modem/routers can be put into "bridge mode" so that the router you have connected to it can do all of the work.

However some ISP's use PPPoE to authenticate to their service so if you bridge your modem/router without putting the PPPoE details into the router you've connected to your (now bridged) modem/router you can end up cut off from the Internet.

Ensure you have your PPPoE username/password for your ISP, it looks a bit like an email address yourusername@somethingelsehere (e.g. This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ), once you have those details and you've bridged your modem/router you can set about chaging your router to use PPPoE, the example below is based on a Dlink DIR-615 but many of the Dlink routers use similar if not the same menus so the instructions will work for many Dlink routers.

The screenshot below (click for a full screen version) shows the PPPoE configuration area of the router, Dlink DIR-615 used for reference.

Connect the PC direct to the Netgear router (the one that is connected to your bridged modem/router) and do this:-

  • Enter http://192.168.0.1/ into your web browser to access your router
  • Select Admin as the username and leave the password blank (by default) to login
  • Click the Manual Internet Connection Setup button
  • On the My Internet Connection is drop box box choose PPPoE (Username/Password) (shown in red on screenshot)
  • Enter your PPPoE user name in the Username Field (shown in green on screenshot)
  • Enter your PPPoE password in the Password Field (shown in green on screenshot) and again in the Verify Password Field
  • Select Always on for the Reconnect Mode (shown in blye on the screenshot)
  • Click Save Settings
  • Ensure your bridged modem/router is connected to the WAN port of the Dlink router
  • Power off the bridged modem/router
  • Power off the Dlink router
  • Power on the bridged modem/router, wait 1 minute
  • Power on the Dlink router
  • Connect all devices to your Dlink router
  • Ensure your PC/Xbox can connect to the Internet/Xbox Live and your done
