How to setup QOS on a Netgear router
- Details
- Written by Administrator
If you have a Netgear router you may be interested in enabling the QOS (Quality of Service) feature on the router (only available on some models). Doing this will enable your Xbox traffic to take outgoing priority over anything else (and any other users) on the network. This could help you if you are having problems with other users on your network using up lots of bandwidth on downloads, video streaming etc etc.
The example guide below is for a Netgear WNR3700 but many of the Netgear range of routers have very similar (if not exact) menus so these instructions should also work for other Linksys/Cisco routers.
There are a few ways to set-up QoS on the Netgear WNR3700 we'll cover the easiest and most popular options, you only need to use one of these options.
Enabling QoS based on the LAN Port the Xbox is connected to
If your Xbox is wired into one of the four Ethernet ports on the Netgear you can enable QoS on that particular port by doing the following:-
- Access your router menu by entering http://www.routerlogin.net, or http://www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.1.1 into your browser - Username should be admin, the password is password (unless you have changed these details
- From the main menu, under Advanced, select QoS Setup
- Click Add Priority Rule
- From the Priority Category list, select Ethernet LAN Port. The QoS - Priority Rules screen will change
- Name the QoS Policy (i.e. Xbox)
- Choose the LAN Port number the Xbox is wired to (1 through 4)
- Change its priority to High (see the blue box in the screenshot below)
- Click Apply
- In the QoS Setup screen, select the Turn Internet Access QoS On check box
- Click Apply
Your Xbox traffic now takes priority
Enabling QoS based on the MAC Address of the Xbox
If your Xbox is wireless the method above is no good to you so you can identify the Xbox by its MAC Address instead
- Find out the mac address of your Xbox 360 click here for more info and make a note of it
- Access your router menu by entering http://www.routerlogin.net, or http://www.routerlogin.com or 192.168.1.1 into your browser - Username should be admin, the password is password (unless you have changed these details
- From the main menu, under Advanced, select QoS Setup
- Click Add Priority Rule
- From the Priority Category list, select MAC Address. The QoS - Priority Rules screen will change
- If the Xbox appears in the MAC Device List, select it. The information from the MAC Device List will be used to populate the policy name, MAC Address, and Device Name fields
- If the Xbox does not appear in the list manually enter its MAC Address in the field (see the green box in the screenshot below) followed by Xbox in the device name
- Change its priority to High (see the blue box in the screenshot below)

- Click Add/Apply
- In the QoS Setup screen, select the Turn Internet Access QoS On check box
- Click Apply
Your Xbox traffic now takes priority
