If you get the error message DNS Failed on the Xbox 360 Xbox Live test or Internet Failed (NXE) when trying to connect to Xbox Live this can be caused for different reasons depending on your setup.

The most common causes for this error are as follows
Connecting your Xbox using ICS
Troubleshooting ICS is now part of our e-Book/video please see our ICS/Bridging Guide
Connecting your Xbox using a Router
If you get the error message using a router it is usually because of one of the reasons below:-
- If you are using manual settings on the Xbox dashboard, you have not put the correct details in the DNS settings, they should be the same as the "Default Gateway", which is the address of your router
- You have not put your ip address settings on "Auto"
- You have not forwarded the Xbox Live Ports through your Firewall to the Xbox
- You have upgraded from a USB Modem to a router but not configured the router. See here for help
- You have entered your username/password info into the PPPoE in your XBox Dashboard, you do not need to do this if you are using an ADSL router/gateway
- Try powering off the router and the Xbox, wait for 30 seconds. Power up the router, then the Xbox and try again
- You have not configured your router with your ISP username/password details, and still use an icon to connect from your PC (using the router as a modem only)
- Wireless Security. If you are using wireless security (you may not even know it if you didnt setup the router) you need all of the security details for WEP or WPA-PSK (whichever of the two you are using)
- Remember when entering the WEP or WPA-Key into the 360 it is CaSe SeNsItIvE
- Wireless Security. The most common problem comes when using a "Wireless Access List" - This may be called something different on your router. This is a list of "allowed" devices using the MAC Address to identify the device. If the access list is switched on. Make sure you enter the MAC Address details of the Xbox.
- Your Internet connection may be down, try a different device (e.g. PC) to confirm Internet connectivity
Connecting your Xbox direct to a cable modem
- Try powering off the modem and the Xbox, wait for 30 seconds. Power up the router, then the Xbox and try again
- When using your PC with the modem direct, if you have to click on an icon to connect to the internet that has your ISP username/password details stored inside, you will need to enter those same details into the PPPoE section of the Xbox
- Your Internet connection may be down, try a different device (e.g. PC) to confirm Internet connectivity
