There are many different ways to connect  to Xbox Live, the diagrams below shows some of the more common ways to connect.

When using a wireless set-up. I would always recommend placing the router close to at least one of your devices. That way you can plug that device direct into the router using an Ethernet cable. And save yourself the price a wireless adapter in the process.

For some people, they will locate the router near the PC and connect that in. And buy a wireless adapter for the Xbox.

But remember you could always locate the router near the Xbox and connect that in via an Ethernet cable, and use a wireless adapter in your PC. It will work out cheaper that way.

3G and 4G broadband connections are likely to be laggy and also have NAT issues , so whilst it is possible to connect using this method it is not recommended for gaming. To learn how to share the connection on your PC/Laptop look here
